5 Tricks and Tips for the Perfect Interior Paint Job

1. Prime walls to avoid spots
If there are holes and cracks filled under the surface you are painting, and you have not applied primer yet, do it. Whatever filler you use to fill the surface would soak up the paint after it is applied. The colour would be the same, but the filler will absorb its shine. A quick coat of primer would solve all the dullness and texture differences. To match texture, prime with a roller matching with the wall’s texture (a 3/8-in. nap roller for smooth walls; 1/2-in. for textured) you can get it from any well-stocked paint store in Nepal.
2. First trim, then ceiling and then walls
Professionals have an order to paint the walls starting from the trim to the ceiling and then walls because it is easier to tape off the trim. If you paint the trim first, you would not have to tape walls and worry about paint getting on the walls. Quality wall paints available in Nepal covers up well. After the trim dries up, tape it off and start painting the ceiling and then walls.
3. Mix all the paint in a large bucket
Same paint in different cans may look different on the walls, especially when they are new and old and are kept under varying temperatures of Nepal. It is conspicuously visible when applied. So, to avoid that, it is better to mix them together. However, you should estimate the amount of paint you need first and mix them instead of mixing them all. If estimating is difficult, you can mix a little more and keep the leftover for the next time pouring it back to the cans.

4. Roll full from top to bottom
If you roll over almost dried paint, you may leave lap marks, which is not a sign of professional painting in Nepal, or anywhere for that matter. Lap marks are stripes created due to uneven layers of paints. To avoid that, you can leave a “wet edge” as you go on painting. Begin from the corner and roll the roller from top to bottom of the wall. Move over a bit with every stroke and back if you miss a spot or if it is thick or has paint running at places. Reload the roller every now and then and keep the open side of the roller on the painted area so you do not leave any part unpainted.

5. Cut the tape after paint dries
If you try to peel the tape after the paint dries, a layer of paint under the tape may come off with it depending on the quality of tape and paints you bought in Nepal. You have to cut it out gently after the paint dries out completely. Wait for at least 24 hours and then slide a sharp knife or blade between wall paints and tape. Begin with the place where you think the grip is less and as you go, pull the tape at 45-degree angle.
